Read Moreo Gujarati entrepreneur Chunnibhai Kapadia and Betty. Kapadia has predominantly appeared in Hindi films. Raj Kapoor launched Dimple (age 16) in his 1973 teen romance, Bobby. It was Rishi Kapoor’s first lead role. Bobby also won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Dimple married the famous Bollywood actor Rajesh Khanna six months before the release of Bobby, in 1973 and retired from acting to raise her daughters. Dimple has daughters Twinkle (b. 1974) and Rinke (b. 1977). Their marriage broke down in April 1982, and Dimple, along with her daughters went back to her parents’ house. Dimple decided to return to acting to prove herself of her capabilities and started working on Ramesh Sippy’s Saagar. The film release was postponed by a year and her comeback movie was Zakhmi Sher (1984). Saagar was released in August 1985 and her performance established her as one of the leading actresses of Hindi cinema in the 1980s. Saagar also won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Though she was initially recognized as a national sex symbol, Kapadia did her best to work in films of all genres and avoided being stereotyped. From mainstream to parallel cinema, Kapadia took on more serious parts in a range of film genres, and received acclaim for her performances in such films as Kaash (1987), Drishti (1990), Lekin... She also played supporting roles in Gardish (1993) and Krantiveer (1994), the latter of which earned her a fourth Filmfare Award. Dimple took up lesser roles through the 1990s and the 2000s. She played a minor part in Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and was noted for her portrayal of the title role in the American production Leela (2002). She has played leading roles in a couple of films like Hum Kaun Hai?
