Born to poet Kaifi Azmi and stage actress Shaukat Azmi, Shabana Azmi (born 18 September 1950) is an Indian film, television and theatre actress. Azmi is an alumna of Film and Television Institute of India of Pune. Shabana holds the record to win five of the National Film Award for Best Actress awards and also five Filmfare Awards. Azmi’s performances in a variety of genres have generally earned her praise and awards and she is regarded as one of the finest actresses in India. She has also received several international honours and was honoured among "women in cinema" at the 30th International Film Festival of India. She is also the recipient of Padma Shri (1988) and Padma Bhushan (2012) awarded by the Government of India.
Shabana Azmi made her acting debut with the 1974 movie Ankur, which was also the directorial debut of Shyam Benegal. Since several leading actresses of that time refused to do it, Azmi was chosen for this role. The film became a major critical success, and Azmi won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performances. Her roles in Arth (1983), Khandhar(1984) and Paar(1985) and Godmother (1999) garnered her with National Film Awards.
Shabana played notable roles in the films like Shyam Benegal's Nishant (1975), Junoon (1978), Susman (1986), and Antarnaad (1992); Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players); Mrinal Sen's Khandhar, Genesis, Ek Din Achanak; Sai Paranjpye's Sparsh and Disha; Gautam Ghose's Paar; Aparna Sen's Picnic and Sati; Mahesh Bhatt's Arth; and Vinay Shukla's Godmother.
Shabana’s commercially successful films are Manmohan Desai's Amar Akbar Anthony and Parvarish and Prakash Mehra's Jwalamukhi. Azmi has also starred in Hollywood productions such as John Schlesinger's Madame Sousatzka (1988) and Roland Joffe's City of Joy (1992).
After Azmi’s engagement with Benjamin Gilani was called off, she got married to Javed Akhtar, a lyricist, poet and Bollywood scriptwriter, on 9 December 1984. Akhtar was first married to Bollywood scriptwriter, Honey Irani and this was his second marriage. Akhtar and Honey Irani had 2 children (Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar).
Shabana has acted in around 120 movies to date mainly in Hindi and Bengali films. Apart from her acting in cinemas and plays, she is a committed social activist. She has worked for causes like child survival, fighting AIDS and injustice. Azmi is a role model on all the fronts.
