He is also a singer, producer, writer, social worker, entrepreneur, television presenter and a former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Mithun Chakraborty was born on 16 June 1950, in Barisal, then in East Bengal and now Bangladesh.


NAXALITE

He was a Naxalite before entering films. He married actress Yogeeta Bali in 1979. They have three sons and a daughter. Mithun Da is the recipient of two Filmfare Awards and three National Film Awards. Chakraborty’s debut movie as an actor was the art-house drama Mrigayaa (1976).


AWARDS

CAREER

In a career span of more than 40 years, Chakraborty has appeared in more than 350 films, including Bengali, Hindi, Odia, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Punjabi pictures. Mithun Da’s performance in the 1982 movie Disco Dancer as Jimmy is unforgettable. This movie was a commercial success in India and the Soviet Union and Russia. Ravikant Nagaich’s low budget spy film Surakshaa (1979) brought a lot of success to Mithun and he rose to stardom. Mithun’s roles in films such as Saahas, Wardat, Wanted, Boxer, Pyar Jhukta Nahi, Pyari Behna, Avinash, Dance Dance, Prem Pratigya, Mujrim, Agneepath, Yugandhar, The Don and Jallad are best remembered.


1980s

There was no looking back for Mithun Da and he ruled Bollywood in the 1980s as he starred in over 110 releases in this decade, in various genres such as action, family drama, romance, and comedy.


AWARDS

His role as Krishnan Iyer Nariyal Paniwala in the film Agneepath earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1991. The movies which garnered him with two more National Film Awards are Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). Mithun Da would have so many releases in a year that it affected the business of his films, as happened in 1989, where he had a record 19 films. In the 1990s also, Mithun Chakraborty had a record of 100 plus releases.


He won the Filmfare Best Villain Award and Star Screen Award Best Villain for the year 1995 for his performance in Jallad. The years 1998 and 1999 saw 30 releases of Mithun Da. Mithun Chakraborty has also worked in Bengali cinema in parallel to his Bollywood career. His first Bengali cinema was Arabinda Mukhopadhyay's Nadi Theke Sagare (1978) which was a major success at the box office.


He won his second National Award in 1992 for his role in Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Tahader. Recent films of Mithun Chakraborty include Veer, (2010) with Salman Khan and Golmaal 3 (2010), with Ajay Devgn, Housefull 2(2012), OMG – Oh My God! (2012), and Khiladi 786(2012) with Akshay Kumar. Few movies of Mithun Da other than Hindi and Bengali language films are Gopala Gopala (Telugu), Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka (Tamil), The Villain (Kannada).


TV SHOWS

Mithun Da first acted on TV in the comedy show The Drama Company. He has judged various reality dance shows like Dance Bangla Dance, Dance India Dance, and Dance India Dance Li'l Masters. TV Dance reality show Dance India Dance where Chakraborty is the Grandmaster has already been entered in Limca Book of Records and Guinness World Records. Several books on Mithun Chakraborty have been published in Bengali, Hindi and English languages.


POLITICS

Chakraborty joined as a Member of Parliament after the West Bengal Rajya Sabha Assembly Polls which were held on February 7, 2014. He resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on 26 December 2016.
